Energy Production and Metabolism
Metabolism means the sum total of biochemical reactions going on in the body. A
major part of metabolism is the conversion of the energy stored in food
components such as sugar into usable energy.
Glucose, a type of sugar, is the main form of energy delivered to the cells by
the blood, though fats, proteins and other sugars are sometimes used too. The
conversion of glucose into usable energy happens mainly inside structures within
the cell called mitochondria.
