Hormones
Hormones are messenger molecules secreted by glands such as the thyroid into the
bloodstream. The hormone system is one of the body's principle means of
self-regulation, allowing you to adapt and respond to changing circumstances,
both physical and psychological. An example is adrenalin, which is secreted by
the adrenal glands in response to stress or danger,
and has the effect of preparing the body for action - it is part of the "fight
or flight" response.
Other important hormones include:
- thyroid hormones - control metabolic rate or energy
production.
- insulin - controls blood sugar levels
The brain is the master gland, insofar as it controls the other glands.
Conversely hormones can affect how we think, feel and act.
Problems or imbalances in hormone levels can impact on our mental and emotional
well-being. Common symptoms include fatigue, poor focus, poor memory and
depression.
